DescriptionMesna(Uromitexan, Mesnex), a sulfhydryl compound that is used to reduce the incidence of hemorrhagic cystitis associated with certain chemotherapeutic agents. Mesna is converted to a free thiol compound in the kidney, where it binds to and inactivates acrolein and other urotoxic metabolites of ifosfamide and cyclophosphamide, thereby reducing their toxic effects on the urinary tract during urinary excretion.(In Vitro):Mesna (1-1000 μM) reduces H2O2, HOCl and OH concentrations in a dose-dependent manner, with an IC50 of 32, 21, and 305 μM, respectively in cell-free experiments.(In Vivo):Mesna (150 mg/kg; a single i.p.) protects the rat brain against traumatic injury.Mesna (200 mg/kg; a single i.p.) attenuates the cisplatin-induced ovarian damages in rats.
